Disclaimer
This website is based on the research of Alfred J. Askin (deceased) and is kept online in his memory by his family. The register entries are reproduced exactly as Alf wrote them between 2000 and 2005, including his abbreviations and occasional slips of the keyboard. Where he had not written up a recipient, details have been added from the public record (The London Gazette and Wikipedia's lists of VC recipients), and awards made since his death have been added from public sources. None of it is an official record. Please verify any detail before relying on it.
Sponsorship and advertising
Sponsorship payments and advertising income are collected by Creative Filter Ltd (trading as High Heel Creative), which hosts and maintains the site for the family, and are put towards the running costs of victoriacross.co.uk (around £375 a year). This is not a registered charity. We do not accept links to gambling, casino, adult, or illegal or banned websites. See Support the Site.
No contact facility
Alf answered hundreds of enquiries a month; sadly the family cannot continue that service. The site therefore has no contact form, e-mail address or guestbook, and we cannot respond to research requests. The links page lists organisations who can help, and the support page explains how to sponsor a page.
The original site
Alf's original website, exactly as he left it, is preserved unchanged at old.victoriacross.co.uk. It is kept as a historical record; its contact details no longer work.
What changed in the 2026 rebuild
- Every page of the original site was carried over (see the site index), re-set in Alf's deep red and pale yellow colours.
- Each of the 1,382 recipients now has his own page, with Alf's entry, a citation digest, map links for the memorial and research links.
- A search by name, regiment, campaign, dates and places.
- Awards since 2005 and current statistics; places to visit with maps.
- Accessibility: large-text and high-contrast controls, keyboard navigation and screen-reader labels throughout.
- The visitor counter continues from the 3,742,635 visitors recorded by the original site.
